Counting on Her Fingers

Pomme is a genius.  I’m not biased or anything.  But I do think it’s exceptional that at age 2.5, she knows all her letters and half of the letter sounds, has known all her colours for almost a year, knows all her shapes, knows all the written digits and is super-keen to point them out [...]

Getting Organized

With the new rule in place about no computer for me before noon, and with Flipper taking some maternally-imposed down time in his room, I kind of had some time to kill this morning.
So I pounced on Pomme’s bedroom, which at one time a few months ago had been a paragon of Montessori organization and [...]

My Daughter is the Cutest. Toddler. Ever.

And I’m NOT just saying that because I’m her mother.  Well, maybe I’m just a little bit influenced by that.  But we do hear that an awful lot even from strangers…
Don’t want to take my word for it?  Have a look for yourself.  Here she is cuddlin Gunther the “orange cat”, who she used to [...]

New Carnival of Homeschooling

The latest Carnival of Homeschooling is up, and while I didn’t submit a post this week (we’ve been sick around here so I haven’t done much blogging), I’m still looking forward to reading a ton of great posts from other blogs!
I’m particularly looking forward to Home is Where You Start From’s look at Homer’s Odyssey.  [...]

Toddler Smarts on Display

Here’s how Pomme has been showing off her developing smarts this week:

According to her, the one on the bottom is a cat, the one at the very top is a pig, and the rest are whales.  The spots are eyes.  She has labelled her drawings before (usually as whales lol), and she has drawn circles, [...]

Video: My 2-year-old Can Crack Eggs– Montessori, Practical Life, and Cooking Skills

As I’ve mentioned before, we are following a Montessori-inspired philosophy with Pomme’s toddlerhood. Following her interests, she has ample opportunity to learn through self-motivated exploration.  At this age, the emphasis is more on “Practical Life” skills than on ‘academics.’  She learns primarily through observation, imitation, and experimentation, as indeed human beings are designed to learn!
There [...]

Creatively Combining

Today Pomme was playing/working with her wooden shape puzzle by Melissa and Doug, and the shape-matching cards I had made to go with it, when I noticed something interesting.
She had received Melissa and Doug’s clock shape puzzle for Christmas… or her birthday.  I’m ashamed to say I can’t remember which.  I think it was her [...]

Question the Crib! New Post at Eco Child’s Play

My latest article is up at Eco Child’s Play. This is the first in a weekly series exploring some “baby essentials” that aren’t essential at all. They may be useful, they may be the best choice for some families. But we shouldn’t just take it as a given that they are “essential”. [...]

Kids Love to “Work” When It’s Montessori “Toys!”

I’ve put the words “work” and “toys” in quotes in the title of this article, because for young children, the ideas of “work” and “play” are synonymous.  They have not yet made a judgment decision that “play” is all for fun and “work” is necessary but unpleasant.  To the young child, everything is exploration and [...]

Toddlers and Housework – Part of the Action

A common ‘complaint’ of parents with toddlers is… how do you get your housework done?  Especially when they start dropping their afternoon nap!  That was my only time to catch up!
Savvy parents don’t try to separate their children from the care of their homes, they include them.  Rather than waiting until your child is asleep [...]
