Autumn Session Update

I was just reviewing my previous post where I summarized what we’d accomplished in our first 6 weeks of a Charlotte Mason approach.  That was back in March.  It was fascinating to look back at what we’ve changed, what we’ve maintained, where we’ve stalled and where we’ve progressed.
One big change is that I stopped thinking [...]

Not Back to School Today!

Today was back-to-school day for kids across our province.  While most every other family with school-aged children was getting up early, packing new bookbags, rushing over breakfast, running out the door to catch the bus… while moms were missing their babies (whether off for the first time or the twelfth) within a few hours of [...]

First Session Wrap-up: Our First Six Weeks of Charlotte Mason

We’ve come to the end of our first session of homeschooling with a Charlotte Mason approach.  I decided to follow the idea of organizing 6-week session blocks according to the TangleWood School’s suggestions.  At the end of the session, we compare what we’ve done with what we’ve planned and see what adjustments might need to [...]

Busy, Busy Day Part I: School Time

Today was just the kind of day where lots of little things happened, one after the other.  So much so that I can’t bear to put it all in one post, so today’s post is a multi-parter!
Flipper was going to a friend’s house at lunchtime today, so he did most of his schoolwork this morning.  [...]

Happy Pi Day!

Of course, today was Pi Day, or 3.14 on the calendar.  As a certified math geek, I think this is just an amazing idea.
Flipper has been asking about pi quite a bit recently… he wanted to know what it was, what it meant, and he wanted to know how far I had it memorized.  (3.1415926 [...]

Toddler Smarts on Display

Here’s how Pomme has been showing off her developing smarts this week:

According to her, the one on the bottom is a cat, the one at the very top is a pig, and the rest are whales.  The spots are eyes.  She has labelled her drawings before (usually as whales lol), and she has drawn circles, [...]

Thoughts on Unschooling and “Holes”

Recently I responded on a homeschooling messageboard to a query about unschooling.  A mom was contemplating homeschooling her kids, and was intrigued by the idea of unschooling, but concerned about the possibility of missing certain things if her kids didn’t happen to learn them.  Things like division.
My reply garnered an “excellent post” response… so I [...]

A Charlotte Mason Shift

Today was day 2 of our new, Charlotte Mason-inspired schoolday.  I’d meant to blog about the plans for this whole thing, the reasons and rationales and ideas and all that, before actually starting it.  But, ya know, life and busy-ness and all that stuff.  The actual planning took up any spare time I might have [...]

Curriculum (and Other Stuff) for Sale…

If anyone is interested, I’ve got a few books I’d like to sell.   Everything is located in Canada, I’ll ship to the US if you pay for the shipping costs of course.  Cat-friendly, non-smoking home.  I’ve offered these on homeschool forums ad nauseum with no takers.   Honestly, I’d just like to get rid of [...]

Square Roots by Narrowing Down

Today we learned square roots in our math lesson.  I loved the approach — this is RightStart Math, level E.  No big repetitive worksheets to practice it.  Just “what’s 8 squared?”  “That’s 64.”  “Okay, the square root of 64 is 8.”  “Oooooohhhh!” “So, what’s the square root of 81?” “That’s 9!!”  “Great!  Let’s play some [...]
