Saving Data: New External Hard Drive

I bit the bullet today and purchased our early Christmas present… a 500 Gig Seagate FreeAgent Desk external hard drive.

My poor little 120Gigs of hard drive space have been stuffed full for quite some time. I’ve deleted nearly ALL my installed games, so that the only thing left is the Sims2… which I haven’t even played in a couple years, but the installation of all the expansions is SUCH a pain that I couldn’t bear to uninstall them. Plus, I got myself Apartment Life for Christmas…

Yeah, with only system software and “essential” applications, and personal files, we had 120 Gigs FULL. This wouldn’t in itself be a problem, except that I have two 2-Gig data cards of digital photos and videos, dating back months, waiting to be uploaded.

Hubby wanted me to just back up our massive quantities of photos onto DVD’s. But with only 4Gigs per DVD, that would be a lot of discs, plus I was nervous about having them ONLY on discs, which can get lost, scratched, broken… having DVD backups makes perfect sense and I still plan to do that, but I don’t want to trust them as the ONLY storage! We finally agreed that an external hard drive was the best solution.

So it’s now happily chugging away…transferring about 40 Gigs… which is ONLY the “My Pictures” folder. It glows and pulsates… it’s pretty! And… it was on sale, $40 off.

I can’t wait to finally get some new pictures up. This blog needs some colour!

We’ll back up everything important onto my new little silver buddy — we’re surprised my internal hard drive is still kicking, it’s no youngster — then I can reinstall my games! Now all I need is time to play them…
